Biography
Biography
Born and raised in Hong Kong, LAU Yik Long is a versatile musician passionate about exploring various facets of this multifaceted discipline.
As a composer, Lau enjoys integrating his emotional responses to daily encounters and theoretical insights into his music, seeking to draw connections between the old and the new. He studied with Chan Kai Young, Chan Wai Kwong Victor, Lee Wan Ki Wendy, Lo Hau-man and Charles Kwong. Lau’s “Preces and Responses” was highly praised by the renowned British composer John Rutter; he was one of the finalists of the “2022 Hong Kong New Generation” competition. Lau’s music has been performed by numerous local and international music groups including Hong Kong Wind Kamerata, Mivos Quartet, Cong Quartet, St John’s Cathedral Choir, Aqua Voice and Chung Chi Wind Orchestra. Recently, Lau has delved into writing Cantonese choral works, ensuring the lyrics are intelligible in all voice parts. In 2024, his compositions have been premiered in Hong Kong, the UK and the US.
Lau actively engages in the local choral scene. He is a member of the premier choral ensemble NOĒMA and regularly sings with eminent Hong Kong choirs including Die Konzertisten and St John’s Cathedral Choir. As a choral conductor, Lau has extensive experience preparing choirs for premieres. While at the CUHK Music Department, he worked closely with Aqua Voice – a chamber choir organised by undergraduate students – to promote choral music within and beyond the campus. In 2018, he served as Chung Chi Choir’s assistant conductor – a rare post for which he was the sole candidate in the past decade.
Lau has researched meter and rhythms in Stravinsky’s Neoclassical music, presenting papers at international and regional conferences. He integrates his academic knowledge into his education endeavours, spreading music and its power to a wider audience, especially the next generation. Lau presented over 150 music-theory-related episodes in RTHK Radio 4 weekly programmes.
Lau obtained a DipABRSM in singing under Alan Tsang's tutorage. He is also a music administrator. He co-organised several widely acclaimed events in recent years. One highlight is the lecture demonstration and conference on Cantonese Choral Music at CUHK in 2021 and 2023.
Lau graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong with a BA (Music), an MPhil (Music Theory), and an MMus (Composition) degree.
